Plot/Outline

Leona is a new recruit to the Tank Police, an elite unit who bring the "force" to law enforcement. Massive collateral damage aside, they have been very successful in reducing crime.

Leona's first job involves stopping a small team intent on stealing something rather unexpected. Unfortunately in the process she totals the tank she is driving (as well as substantial real estate on the way). This makes several people unhappy.

The remainder of the series involves a great deal more chasing around in tanks, destruction of property, and the occasional sympathetic look at the villains of the piece...

Review

Dominion Tank Police is a fun romp through a future dystopia where the police have firepower on their side (if, apparently, not all that much concern about actually stopping crime). Lots of explosions, collapsing buildings, and outrageous actions all 'round, this is shounen [boys] anime at its most extreme.

The first two OVAs are pretty straightforward in the scenario presented - basically it's mostly "chase" sequences (with the aforementioned collateral damage). The second two are more thoughtful, looking briefly into what it means to be human, and showing the villains as perhaps not all that bad. However, the core of the show is still explosions, fan service [nudity] and humour.

It's superior material of its type, and worth watching - "you will like it if you like this sort of thing". Personally I prefer a little more depth, which explains the strictly average ratings I've given it, but it's pleasant enough fare.

The fan service (particularly with respect to the cat girls) gets a bit extreme sometimes; the first extended view of Annapuma and Unipuma is basically a strip show (with naughty bits strategically concealed by their plentiful hair). No attempt is made to explain how they are abruptly clothed (albeit skimpily) moments later.

Animation is of decent quality, although there were some strong digital artefacts (in particular "jaggies" in outlines) from time to time. Nothing terribly outstanding. Sound was primarily large explosions and gunfire plus dialogue - lot a lot of variety, but then the subject matter doesn't much require it.

Packaging is a fairly standard DVD clip with a "flower" clip (i.e. plastic projections coming out of the case then out to physically hold the DVD). I'm not fond of this type of case as it can be difficult to remove the DVD without risking damage.

Extras

Extras include the usual previews, a "character gallery" (with focus on the catgirls Annapuma and Unipuma), web link and Director's comments. The gallery shows brief clips from the series specific to each character (similar to what is done with the Slayers box sets), except that the catgirls get four clips whereas the other major characters get one each.

Wrapup

Pure shounen frantic fun in a turn-your-brain-in-at-the-door kind of way. Worth watching, but not particularly outstanding - unless you have an inordinate fondness for catgirls.
